August 15th

Today was our first day of lessons. To be honest, I was not sure what to expect when I walked in the room. Our teacher, Mr. Liu, was very animated and down to Earth. There was something about his blunt and simple teaching style that really connected with me. We were there for over two hours, but it didn’t feel like that. First we learned finals, then tones, and then initials. Learning each group individually was alright, but putting tones together with finals was a little difficult at first. But Mr. Liu stressed the importance of saying what came naturally, and learning from instinct. That resonated with me the most. I love languages, partly because they came naturally to me. His support in that natural ability really made our first lesson seem almost easy. We moved quickly through the material, and after only one lesson we can already have a short introductory conversation with one another. Our progress to me is astonishing because none of my high school classes ever covered so much information so successfully in only one session. If the rest of our classes are going to be like this then I am very much looking forward to them. image
