On behalf of the staff and counselor I would like welcome you to our own little writer’s corner. We will be posting an article everyday in order to keep everyone updated on the activities that occurred each day.
Hello! My name is Rodolfo, and I am a freshman at The King’s College. I have the privilege of being a camp counselor for Shining Future. Every counselor here will get a chance to write their own little article in order for you to be able to get what has been happening from different point of views. What a great, busy and tiring first day of camp it has been for everyone. The camp is one day old, but it already has taken off to a great start. The morning started with breakfast at Pace University’s Cafeteria. Students were given a full on breakfast that consisted of a variety of food such as eggs, pancakes, sausage and many other choices.
After breakfast we headed to NYU in order to begin classes that are taught by our counselors. Today the students were in for a treat, literally.
The first class they received was from Melanie. New York is a big city, in fact the biggest in the US. Like they say “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and neither was New York. During Melanie’s class campers were able to learn about the history of the city that never sleeps, New York City.
Lauren was up next and as she walked up, campers knew that she had something interesting as she had a bag full of American snacks. Lauren’s topic was American cuisine and through her use of videos and Power Point she explained about the different types of food and meals we have in the US. To end her lecture, Lauren took out a bunch of snack including Doritos, Oreos, and even the classic Twinkies.
To end the classes, Christian was up and presented about the American Culture. Christian went over the different customs, traditions and the different characteristics that make America the Melting Pot.
Lunch was just a quick meal on the subway as we headed to Southern Brooklyn for a press conference with a Democratic Nominee. Right off the bat we were welcomed by the campaign staff, and waited for Domenic Recchia, the candidate, to arrive. As soon as he arrived the conference started. This was a special day for the Chinese community as Domenic announced his Chinese name. Local newspapers and Media outlets were there to cover the event. The campers got to ask questions and interact with Domenic.
As we headed back to Manhattan the student got to hear that there would be rest time so that was definitely a relief.
Dinner was next and just like breakfast the campers were able to enjoy American foods like Chicken, macaroni and cheese, and even rice with beans. Soon after dinner, each group separated and went out to the city with their perspective counselor. Some groups headed to Time Square and another group walked the Brooklyn Bridge for some ice cream at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Each group came back tired and headed to their dorms. The day was wrapped and the campers rested for another day full of activities.
