Today was our last full day of activities here in Beijing, and we managed to pack in several fun cultural activities. We visited an arts center where we first learned how to make bracelets in the traditional Chinese fashion. It was similar to weaving friendship bracelets, but we used a thicker string and singed the ends when finished to prevent fraying. The bracelet-making was very relaxing to me and set the tone for the rest of the day.
After a fancy lunch, we learned from a calligraphy master about the proper technique for writing beautiful Chinese characters with ink. He discussed the history of the characters and explained how they have evolved over time, as do people from one generation to the next.
Lastly, we got to learn about the ancient art of Tai Chi, which has numerous health and wellness benefits and also functions as a form of self-defense. Balance and control are critical aspects, and it felt good to slow down for a moment and focus intently on the motions. Our Tai Chi teachers were all very impressive.
Tomorrow we leave, and I’m not quite ready to go as I know I still have so much to learn about China. Fortunately we have 10 year visas and I hope I will find a way to return in the next decade!
