Day 3 – American Flags, Sign Language, Internships & Technology + a Trip to the MET

Today we started our day full of activities. At lunch we had a great deal of choices of American foods. The traditional American breakfast consisted on French toast, pancakes, bacon, sausage, bagels, and fruit salad – the first start to our cultural immersion in New York City. Following breakfast, we had the chance to sit in the setting of a prestigious American classroom.

Our first class covered a particular small town in Rhode Island called Bristol. We learned about the demographics, and what this quaint town is known for. In our presentation about this small town we had the students draw American flags. This was an exciting task because I remember as a student my first art task in American history class was drawing an American flag, which is a symbol of freedom, liberty, and equality for all.

Secondly, we discussed the development of technology in America throughout the past century. Technology has come a long way, and it is definitely insane to see that a once five pound iPhone can become not even a pound, yet still have more features! American technology has definitely affected everyone around the world, and it was very exciting to teach the students these fun facts.

Lastly, in terms of careers we stressed the importance of exploring career options, and learning what is available in the job market. Internships are the new “job” for colleges students, and they are great résumé fodder. Internships are important while pursuing a specific career path because they give students the experience that they need and allow them to decide whether or not they want to continue that job track. To top it off, we visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art which a museum that many college students intern at in order to figure out their career of choice or to enhance their love for that career path.
