Hi! My name is Christian and I am a freshman at Pace University. Today was quite a day for our students! We started out the morning with breakfast in the Pace cafeteria, and then we were off to morning classes. It was there that the students had the opportunity to learn about Music in America from Melanie, African-American Culture from Lizzy, American Technology from Rodolfo, and my major. The presentations were very informative as the students took key facts away from each and were able to apply them as we ventured out into the city.
Melanie’s presentation prepared the students for the concert we will attend tomorrow. She even have the students an opportunity to dance the Cha Cha Slide and the Cupid Shuffle. Lizzy compared her culture to the culture of the students, while Rodolfo took a different route and spoke about technological advances and how they have benefitted us all. In my presentation, I spoke about how the United States Constitution came to be.
After eating lunch, all of the students and counselors walked to the Fulton street Subway Station and took the train to Chinatown in Brooklyn. There, each student had the chance to venture out in groups with the hope of registering local citizens to vote. It was so heartwarming to see how dedicated and determined the students were. Even though some of the Brooklyn residents were rude, the students kept going as they wanted to accomplish their goal. They inspired me; I wish I had half of the determination my students do.
It has been so wonderful to see these students engaged and eager to learn. Class never fails to be interesting; whether we play a game, have a discussion, or watch a video. I have found that each student is unique in his or her own way, and it’s been eye-opening to see the differences between our cultures. Whether it’s explaining a food, or who a soccer player is, I love teaching these kids. The students have taught me just as much as I have taught them, if not more.
