The Finer Arts

Today we had the opportunity to explore some of the finer Chinese arts of calligraphy, knot tying, and tai chi. I was pretty impressed with the knot tying, the knots were simple to perform but looked very impressive. In no time at all I walked away with a small bracelet that actually looks like something I could have bought at a souvenir shop. I also now have a huge respect for the art of calligraphy, the fact that their are different forms, making art while staying within the confines of the language are impressive. The instructor said it gave a feeling that could not be expressed in words and that we would likely not experience it. I think his meaning here was that the art is both in the characters themselves and how they look, but also the physical meaning of the characters together. It is like a good book or a fine poem but also is good to look at in its own right. The tai chi was also very interesting both to watch and to practice.
